Boot Jacks

Boot Jacks are an important an interesting piece of early Americana!  Beetle / Cricket forms are a very common theme, and the design worked really well to accomplish the task so there were numerous different examples that were produced and marketed.  Nearly every one offered here is slightly different from the other, and most all have good age and detail.  Some of the newer ones o this page are still 50 years old or more.  A couple can be bought today being offered as antiques, or simply not identified.

Boot jacks are still being produced today.   In general the castings are cruder and the detailing less defined than the earliest originals or good early recasts.  Many are made of materials other than Cast Iron such as brass or aluminum.  Many of the recasts are now quite old and at times it is hard to tell.  There is no problem identifying some of the newer examples.

Beetle / Cricket Aluminum Boot Jack Ricardo Beetle / Cricket Aluminum Boot Jack    This bootjack is marked Ricardo on the inside. It is nicely done and has good details.   We consider all bootjacks made out of Aluminum to be newer recasts, even if they are now 40 or more years old.  I am not sure who Ricardo is but assume it is Mexican and made for the user / decorator market.  .

The Vernon Co. of Vernon Iowa BootJackThe Vernon Co.  of Vernon Iowa BootJack   This outfit is known for making things like this as promotional pieces for marketing / advertising.  Usually it has another companies name as the finished product.  I believe they are still in business, probably employing people who use to make washing machines in nearby Newton..

Vintage Cast Iron Boot JackVintage Cast Iron Boot Jack  The writing on this one says Original Model & Paris.  The pic is of a Star and Horseshoe.  The questions that remain are is it French or Texan.  Does it commemorate some event happening, or place, and Finally how old is it?  It is a very rough casting, not at all what you would expect from either.

Big Ear Donkey / Mule / Jackass Cast Iron Boot JackBig Ear Jackass / Donkey / Mule Cast Iron Boot Jack  At first glance this looks like something out of a gift shop you might find in Texas.  But more likely it's a piece of political memorabilia commemorating, if not dating from, the 1932 Roosevelt v. Hoover presidential election.  "Roosevelt in 32" is cast into it on the back side.   It's hard to tell if it actually dates from them or was made after the fact.  The inventory sheet indicates the collector paid dearly for this one as well.  He is letting it go at a bargain rate.

Big Ear Jackass / Donkey / Mule Roosevelt Cast Iron Boot JackBig Ear Jackass / Donkey / Mule Roosevelt Cast Iron Boot Jack   This example has the "Roosevelt in 32" on the front side of the ears, unlike the one above.   Is it legit or older than that one? I doubt it.  Still it's a nice example of a fairly common form of boot jack.

Steer Cast Aluminum Boot JackCast Aluminum Steer Boot Jack   This is stamped Winner Arvanda Colo on the inside.  I read these were a prize from the rodeo.  Hopefully the riders risking their lives got more than these.    More likely a gift to the carnival crowd giving their money away in the search for a win in that venue.
