Early 19th Century French Rear Stirrup Handle Swing Gate Box Iron   This is a  rare and unusual iron with its rear "stirrup" handle support design.  As with many early 19th century  European irons the body and sides have a textured surface.  It lends character to the iron and attests to its history.  The gate latch is very nice and operable.  The handle supports are tight.  The wood handle is in good condition. A nice example!

Decorated Brass Box Iron   This is a really nicely done  brass box iron with lift gate door.  The engraving is well done and covers the top and edges of the iron.  The wooden handle is very well done as well.   The rear door operates as it should but there is a small difference in the "track" or guide from side to side.  This is one of the nicest decorated irons in this collection.

European Brass OxTongue Box Iron    It’s interesting the way so many of the 19th Century European irons were so decorative and so pretty compared to the more utilitarian look of American irons of the day.  This is an ox tongue shaped iron, and I have to admit, these open-ended handles always throw me.  I always feel like I’m going to grab them the wrong way and iron backwards with them, with the toe to the rear and the heal to the front.  Guess it’s a good think I never had to use one.  This example is complete with its heating slug.   Really beautiful and ready to display!     Click for Pic

Ox Tongue Box Iron   This iron has an iron strap handle that has been collapsed downward and forward to make it better at ironing.  I have seen this done enough times to recognize it as an intentional act, that being to move the center of gravity lower and more forward to help the user apply more pressure there while ironing.  Lots of character!

European Brass Box Iron    I’m not sure of the exact country this iron originates from, but our consigner indicated it was Portuguese.  In any case its styling is certainly 19th Century European.  It has a rather unusual latch for the rear door---somebody’s slightly different idea.  The brass body has great patina and it is complete with its perfectly shaped slug.     Click for Pic

3 English Iron Box Irons   This style of iron is usually associated with England, but they were made all over the European continent.  They also came in a myriad of sizes and what we have here are 3 relatively small ones each with an original slug.  Each is in nice condition including the gates and handles.  In the smallest sizes these are particularly hard to find.
