Charcoal Irons
Japanese
Charcoal Iron on Trivet
This is an unusual Japanese Iron. From the era
when they first began to mimic or copy Western ideas and moved away from the
traditional pan irons usually associated with the orient. Its
design is a bit innovative and has a nice
embossed heat shield and rotating / removable chimney.
It is also different in that the body is a combination of cast iron and heavy
gauge sheet steel, and the front latch is an unusual spring loaded affair. The iron is complete with its inside trivet to keep
the coals off the bottom as well as the matching trivet it sits on.
An absolutely beautiful iron!

Flott
Charcoal Iron
This charcoal iron has a logo of a Barracuda going through a loop that
I have seen on Feldmeyer type gas irons, so they must have made a range of
irons over a period of time. The top was cracked at one point and
repaired. It has an interesting look to it. Nice!!

Different "Venus Patent" Charcoal Irons
These are both Hungarian irons. On the left is the "Venus II".
This is a great design charcoal iron
that incorporates all sorts of "cutting edge" ideas to make ironing easier
and more efficient. One almost needs a degree in mechanical engineering to
figure out the latch in the front. The top opens to load it with fuel and
the bottom hinges open to empty the ashes out. To open it you lift the knob
and turn 1/4 turn in one direction and the top latch releases. You then
have to turn the knob a 1/2 turn in the opposite direction and the bottom
latch releases. To close it back up you go back and forth till it goes into
place. Simple but complicated!
There is a lot of info about the iron cast
into the top and it looks great. All of the small cast points in the bottom must
have been designed for heat transfer and air flow. An elegant solution to an
age old problem of getting coal to burn cleanly. The designer was so sure
of himself that he felt no need to incorporate a chimney into the design. I
wonder if it worked as planned.
On the right is the slightly smaller version simply called
the "Venus". The overall design is similar, and from the inside the
bottom "grate" consisting of the cast points looks the same. But on
this model the bottom does not hinge open---to get rid of the ash you have to dump
it out the back. Thus the latch is much less complicated and actually
more graphic, being designed with a weighted Venus (I assume) head.
They make a handsome pair!

"Vulcan
Patent" Charcoal Iron
This is a variation on the theme of the Venus patent irons above.
Was it made by the same company or by a competitor / copier? The
double hinge "bottom dump" latching mechanism is the same as that of the
Venus II. There is an old repair to the top and it is quite a bit
rougher in condition than the two Venus irons above. But unusual!

Charcoal
Iron with Decorated Cast Top
This charcoal iron has a nickel plated body and a great
decorated cast iron top. It is marked 6 1/2 which is the length.
The lock is different from most, and the decorated border on the top is a feature
rarely seen on this style of iron. The vent cover on the rear seems to
be missing. Different, and nice!!

"The
Workwell" Charcoal Iron
I guess it did---Work well. Or as well as could be expected given
the fuel source. This is a good looking charcoal iron from Nova Scotia.
It's in great condition and there is lots of info written on the heat shield
with the Halifax location and the name "Scipio Charcoal Supplies".
Under the heat shield, cast into the top, is where it reads "Workwell Patent".
Nice!
