Little Pressing Irons for Special Purposes
These antique sad irons are some of the most interesting and varied in both their design and in their function or purpose. In this day and age when all irons look alike, and most fabrics and clothing styles can be handled with pretty much the same iron, it's hard to imagine that a century ago specialization was the name of the game. Although the ironing chore was anything but a game. There were irons that had to be used for laces, linens and silks that were different from the ones used for heavyweight fabrics like wools and heavy cottons. There were irons that were specially shaped for ironing sleeves, flounces, tucks, cuffs and collars. There were irons used to make ruffles, pleats and crimps, and irons used to polish fabrics smooth and shiny. There were irons used to make flower shapes and irons made to touch up curled edges. When the fashions of the day changed, so too did the irons. The young girl of the day was expected to learn all of the intricacies of irons, so little irons were manufactured to help her master the task. The selection below are sure to add interest and variety to any collection!
2 Miniature Goffering Irons Dating from the mid-1800's both of these goffering irons were made by the renown English firm---one is marked "Kenrick" and the other "A. Kenrick". Both are beautifully decorative and complete with their original pokers. Standing only 4-4.5 inches high it's a real treat to find goffers in these diminutive sizes and in this kind of condition! Child-Size Antique Sleeve Iron This nickel plated children's sleeve iron would have been just the iron for a young girl to use to learn the fine points of ironing. And just the right size for an adult to use to get into the tiny tucks and pleats that were so prevalent in antique clothing. It measures 4.25 inches from the back of the gracefully rounded heel to the tip of the pointed toe. (TC 322) Click for Pic

Little Tailors Iron with Joseph Hayes Advertising It is unusual to find child-size tailors irons---the very concept is almost an oxymoron! So it's no wonder this category of little irons is very desirable to collectors of antique irons today. This great little tailors iron that barely measures 4 inches long is actually an advertising piece for the Joseph M. Hayes Woolen Company of St. Louis. Their name was proudly cast into both sides of the base and also touted that they supplied "fine woolens" and "fine tailors trimmings". The casting is a little rough on this example but it is priced appropriately as these little tailors irons typically sell for twice what we are offering this one example for.
