Combination Flatirons with Fluters

"Ideal" Charcoal Heated Combination Flatiron / Fluter with Trivet   The "Ideal" was another interesting combination iron.  This manufacturer designed their charcoal iron with a slightly different form of chimney---it's shorter and more angular than the chimney on the Pease.  They did away with the idea of a heat shield and made the rocker as a totally separate piece.  These auxiliary rockers oftentimes go missing, but this example is complete not only with its rocker but also with its matching trivet.  The trivet itself is in just as nice condition as the rest of the iron, and in addition to having a great looking heart design and 1916 date right in the middle of it the trivet gives the additional information that it was produced by the New York Pressing Iron Co.  This antique iron and trivet are in super condition!         Click for Pic     Click for Pic     ML-CF-2

Combination Charcoal Flat and Fluting Iron Marked "Geo. Wallace  Edmond, Oklahoma"     In the many years I have bought and sold antique irons I have never see any iron---flatiron, charcoal iron, fluter or any other type---marked with the name that is on the heat shield of this great combination iron.  Whether it was the name of the patentee or the manufacturer I don't know, but in beautiful stenciled lettering it very clearly reads "Geo. Wallace  Edmond, Oklahoma".  That in itself is pretty unusual---how many other irons do you know of that hail from OK?  I can't think of any right off the top of my head.  Perhaps this could even be the owner's name where the manufacturer, as a marketing gimmick, offered their irons up monogrammed so to speak, much as the winemakers will personalize the label of your bottle of wine today.  I can imagine that by the time this was produced the market for charcoal heated irons in the modern day American home was thinning down rapidly and the makers would do almost anything to move another one off the shelf.

The condition of this combination iron is amazing!  Rarely do you find any charcoal iron looking this good.  Given the nature of their use they are typically found with the nickel plating all but gone and with all the other expected signs of having had a fire smoldering within.  This example looks to have seen very little if any use.         Click for Pic     Click for Pic     ML-CF-3

Charcoal Heated Classen Bros. & Co. Combination Flatiron / Fluting Iron     This company operated out of Ithaca, NY, and proudly so marked this iron.  And it looks to have seen very little use because the tolework stenciling on the heat shield is near 100%.  The iron itself is quite substantial and very well-made.  It's complete with its original sideplate fluter, which is marked "Pat Apld For".  The rocker portion may be a replacement from a different Classen combo iron---the wood of the handle is a somewhat lighter color than the wood grip of the iron itself---but nonetheless it meshes perfectly with the plate and completes the combination feature.          Click for Pic     Click for Pic     ML-CF-4

Rocker Fluter Handle for Charcoal Combo Iron    These are always missing from Combination Charcoal / Fluter Irons.  If you have the time and energy and get lucky you can sometimes find them offered for sale at flea markets as pastry tools, but why bother.  Here is a nice one at a reasonable price.         Click for Pic     Click for Pic     ML-CFH

Combination Flat / Fluting Iron    There are a couple dozen different versions of these combination irons / fluters with hinged tops that can be found.  They are a neat idea.  This one has the original wire clasp which is oftentimes missing.  It is in near mint original condition.  The patent date in on the side, and that is all original nickel and gold wash finish.   You will not find a nicer example any time soon.        Click for Pic     Click for Pic    Click for Pic     Click for Pic
