Special Purpose Antique Sad Irons
Hatters Irons
This is a very nice example of a hard to find hatters iron. Like many aspects of life business etc, hatters had specially designed and shaped irons for their profession even though in the end the desired result was the same. In general the main difference is they are round front, and very heavy. A nice example.
Very Good........$250.00

This slug style hatters iron is in very nice condition. It has a very graphic rear door with lots of information cast into it. It hails from Newark NJ, a hot bed of industry in the 19th century and home to many leather tool makers and hat tool makers.

This iron is similar to the McCoy iron shown further down on this page, but it is unmarked and slightly smaller in size. It has the typical basic shape and design that hatters irons usually have but it has a very unusual shaped bottom to make it suitable to use both going left or right around the edge of the hat with a round bottom with peak in the middle. Different!

This iron has the typical basic shape and design that hatters irons usually have. It is clearly stamped in the side with the name and location. I assume this is the same company that made typical McCoy polishers. This one has a great form and is shaped to facilitate ironing different areas different ways. There are several surfaces that the user could utilize for finishing off specific areas. Look at the additional two pictures to see the unique shapes on the bottom of this iron for this. Different!

This tool was with the other hatters irons. It is marked "Sturgis". The angle of the head is adjustable. It could be a hatter's or a founder's tool as they oftentimes look similar, but in any case the collector felt it was for hats.

This moveable front hatters shackle iron is in great condition. Unlike most this one is stamped on the handle with a name and location. I am not sure if this is the name of the maker of the iron or of the hat shop owner. It is marked "South Norwalk, Conn " and "W.A. Wheeler". Very special!!

This unusual hatters iron is marked with the makers name McCoy in the top and indicates that the patent for it is pending. It is similar to but different from the other McCoy hatters iron I have listed elsewhere. This one has a very distinctive hollowed out portion in the bottom that leaves no doubt that different portions of the irons bottom were for different applications. Very different, and nice.

This hatters brim iron or tolliker iron is the most primitive and earliest of the hatters irons we have listed. The handle portion is wood and the bottom is brass. At first glance it looks like a giant sharks tooth to me. It has a great look and the groove cut into the bottom edge leaves no doubt as to its intended purpose. Very different, and nice.
