Hatter's Irons / Hat Making Irons / Tollikers, Shackles, Brim Irons & More
Hatters Moveable Front Shackle Iron This unusual hatters iron was for finishing off the brim on a hat. They came in different sizes and some are marked and most are not. I see no markings on this one at all. Note the scorched area on the handle. It lends a degree of character and interest to this iron not typically seen.
Very Good ........ $125.00

McDonald's Rotary Hat Iron This is an interesting hat ironing tool and still in it's original box. Both the iron itself and the box are in excellent condition. The directions of how to use it are written on the label and it explains that it was to be heated on a gas jet. It also purports to be "convenient and effective, essential to a gentleman's outfit".

Hatters Iron? This tool was with the other hatters irons. It is marked "Sturgis". The angle of the head is adjustable. It could be a hatter's or a founder's tool as they oftentimes look similar, but in any case the collector felt it was for hats.

Hatters Moveable Front Shackle Iron This hatters iron has a tree branch handle which you find on these style irons from time to time. I think the explanation is that irons like these needed to be very hot to actually accomplish the task they were being asked to do, and that oftentimes resulted in charred or burned handles, necessitating them to be replaced from time to time. Tree limbs a inch or so in diameter were plentiful, free, and easy to get right outside the back door.

Hatters Shackle Iron This hatters iron also has a replaced handle. It also has a rusted through area on the moveable portion and is now only suitable for display if not repaired and strengthened in that area.
Very Good ........ $45.00

Hatters Crown Iron This unusual hatters iron is all metal design. It is for use at the area where the crown meets the brim. The top is clearly marked "HotKap". It is a neat looking iron, but I am not sure how practical given the design and one piece construction unless it was meant to be used cold.
Very Good ........ $175.00 SOLD!

Hatters Moveable Shackle Iron This hatters iron also has the twig handle modification. It is an indication that it was actually used. I have heard that vintage hatters irons that were used are better than new ones because of their past use. Kind of like they know what they are meant to do, and perform better than a new one.
Very Good ........ $125.00 SOLD!

Moveable Front Hatters Shackle Iron This moveable front hatters shackle iron is in great condition. Unlike most this one is stamped on the handle with a name and location. I am not sure if this is the name of the maker of the iron or of the hat shop owner. It is marked "South Norwalk, CONN " and "W.A. Wheeler". Very special!!

McCoy's Hatters Polishing Iron This unusual hatters iron is marked with the makers name McCoy in the top and indicates that the patent for it is pending. It is similar to but different from the other McCoy hatters iron I have listed elsewhere. This one has a very distinctive hollowed out portion in the bottom that leaves no doubt that different portions of the irons bottom were for different applications. Very different, and nice.
Very Good ........ $225.00

Hi Rise Moveable Front Hatters Shackle Iron This hatters iron has unusually tall posts. I imagine in an effort to stop the burned handle problem you often find on these irons. It was a double edge sword no doubt as the lower you were to the work the more accurate and controlled the situation was. I can picture this being considered "top heavy" and wobbly way up here. Note that the body of this one was nickel plated, an attribute you do not often see. Very different!.
Very Good ........ $225.00

Hatters Tolliker Iron This hatters brim iron or tolliker iron is the most primitive and earliest of the hatters irons we have listed. The handle portion is wood and the bottom is brass. At first glance it looks like a giant sharks tooth to me. It has a great look and the groove cut into the bottom edge leaves no doubt as to its intended purpose. Very different, and nice.
