Special Purpose Antique Sad Irons
Polishing Irons
This iron has an extremely wide and fairly thin base and I imagine it was made to specially handle "flatwork" as it was called---tablecloths, sheets, and other large pieces. It is marked on the top with the number 12 and the letters ACG in a circle. It is a very nice iron and is very graphic when you see it in person because of it being so wide.

Polishing Iron Although the sole and handle of this polishing iron is made of cast iron the body itself is constructed from soapstone. The idea was unique enough to qualify inventor Phineas Hood for a patent. The material had the advantage of doing a good job holding the heat. The down side was that it was fragile and would easily chip. And many examples of these irons show some degree of damage. Actually most Hood’s Patent irons that you find are the spade shape version. This double pointed polisher turns up much less frequently. And better yet, this example is in really fine condition. The soapstone portion looks great, the casting of the patent information on the sides of the handle is strong, and the bottom of the sole is smooth and clean. A really nice one that will display beautifully! Click for Pic Click for Pic

I can't imagine why a polishing iron would be called "War Hunt" or what the significance of that name on this polishing iron could be! And I'm not sure if the cross hatch design on the handles bears any relation to the name. But it's pretty distinctive. Aside from that it also has a diamond pattern grid-work sole. I have seen a lot of polishers of this basic shape, but never one with this name.

The idea behind polishing irons was that after you dampened and starched the fabric you would use one of these smooth and rounded bottom irons to impart a shine or sheen to your shirt or blouse. Think of them as little tug boat shaped flatirons! Here are two different examples, the one on the right being made by the English foundry Kenrick.

The one on the right is similar in form to the one known as the MaryAnn B. Cook iron, which is one of the few irons that was patented by a woman. This version is unmarked.

This polishing iron design was patented by Mahoney of Troy, NY in 1876. Unlike other inventors who thought the secret to getting a good shine or polish to the fabric was with a smooth rounded bottom iron, Mr. Mahoney decided the better idea was to use a gridded or diamond pattern sole. Here are a selection of polishing irons of this design.
