Antique Sadirons and Flatirons
or
Bookends & Doorstops
There are an endless variety of this style flat or sad iron both American and International. They were made worldwide. Some were very plain and utilitarian, and we call those bookends or doorstops. Others were very fancy and intricate with a lot of design considerations. They are listed on their respective pages.
It is fun to find one with a new logo or name on them. Or perhaps even one with your name on it.
No collection could ever get them all (although several collectors have made valiant efforts), and different ones appear all the time. The thing about these irons is that they have been in collections for years. They are not commonly found these days. You can not go out and just buy most of these anymore at the local venues. This is the source, and they are priced to sell.
Most are 5 -7" long and weigh 4-7 lbs each.
A note on shipping: I ship most irons in Flat Rate Priority Mail boxes. There are two sizes of these boxes available now. One, two, even three or four irons can fit in the new larger flat rate box making shipping quite reasonable.
Spade-Shaped Sadiron Marked "174" This 7" iron is curiously marked with the number 4 on the toe and then "174" in the middle. I don't have a clue what that might mean, but it is finely made and a really beautiful example of an antique iron. LCM-FL-8
Good ..... $10.00
Spade-Shaped Sadiron Marked "16" This good looking iron is simply marked "16". Great casting, crisp lettering and the heel has a slightly rounded polishing surface. ML-FLT16

English Falkirk Flatiron This nicely pointed spade shaped iron is probably English in origin. It is marked Falkirk number 6, and probably weighs that much. It has a rolled handle and measures 6" long. Free if it's your last name! Click for Pic

IYB Antique Flatiron The center of the logo appears to be a Y in a circle with an I and a B to either side. I have never seen this mark before. It's a nice iron and also have the number 3 on it. Note the attachment points for the tubular handle. It measures 5" long. Click for Pic Click for Pic Click for Pic Click for Pic

2 Flat Irons The iron on the left is a Mexican Pagoel. Not sure if there is some meaning there we Gringos do not know about, or if that is just the company name. The other iron has a cast stylized SA in the top, and I think it too is Spanish. LCM-FL-13a LCM-FL-13b

2 Cold Handle Flatirons 2 Different fixed handle flatirons with cold handle features. On the left is a Salter w/ hollow grip, and the other has a coil wire grip with a maple leaf logo which would make one think it might be Canadian. These date from from the late 1800's and into the early 20th century.
