Special Purpose Antique Sad Irons
Seam and Sleeve Irons
Note: Some of these sleeve irons are sold, but we have others of the same, so please inquire with your wants!
This is a very unusual form of iron. It is a patented idea and Mr. Elwes hailed from Springfield Ohio. It is like a cross between a small tailors iron and a sleeve iron, and is typically called a seam iron, the idea being to be able to concentrate a lot of weight on a narrow swath of fabric. It measures just 1 3/4" wide.

From left to right---a Walker look-alike that is unmarked and very nice, a Colebrookdale fixed handle, and a Sensible detachable handle. These sleeve irons are becoming difficult to find these days, and all 3 of these are very nice.

Here are two sleeve irons that contrast nicely with each other. Both have removable handles.
G.H. Ober and Grand Union Tea Co. Detachable Handle Sleeve Irons
On the left is a sleeve iron made by the Ober Mfg. Co. of Chagrin Falls, OH. Ober irons have a very distinctive handle design and release mechanism and both the iron base and the handle have 1890-something patent dates.
On the right is a sleeve iron marked Grand Union Tea Co. I'm not sure but I think these irons might have been "premiums" given away for shopping at Grand Union grocery stores. There is a patent date on this iron as well.
Note the difference in the shape of the points on these two irons. Together they make for an interesting display!
Very Good........$50.00 each

This Ober is SOLD but I have another! The Grand Union is AVAILABLE!
Collectors of antique irons have dubbed this sleeve iron the "big toe". It's extremely long. It's also extremely thin. I guess the idea was to make it easier to slide it up into those hard-to-reach folds and tucks and pleats of fabric that were all the rage in antique clothing styles. This iron was patented in 1897. A difficult iron to find!
