Egg Scales / Graders & Egg Carriers / Crates
Unusual Marvin Egg Saver Co. Multi-Tier Patented Wooden Egg Carrier This egg crate is a super piece and it looks like it was never used! Manufactured by a small company that was out of Vancouver, WA, this example is in wonderful original condition. The wooden box, with its original green paint surface and stenciled black lettering, holds 4 stacking tiers of wire and cloth egg racks, with each tier holding 3 dozen eggs. (If you need help doing that math, that equates out to 12 dozen eggs!) I have included several pictures so you can see the hand-sewn details and the fabulous condition of this piece. The box itself measures just under 15" x 15" x 12", and the underside of the lid is padded with cotton to protect that top layer of eggs. The patent date of Jan. 5th 1915 along with the manufacturer's name are proudly stenciled on the top, which is held closed by an interesting locking handle mechanism. A great country antique! Excellent.....$495.00
Wooden Humpty Dumpty Egg Crate / Carrier This is the mother of all egg crates with 5 or 6 stacking tiers, with each tier holding 30 eggs (eggs not included!). In natural wood finish the crate is marked "Owosso Mfg. Co. Owosso, MICH". This one has see-through sides and an ingenious method for opening the lid---just slide up the top rail and the lid can shift left or right and then be removed. Click for Pic LCM-EC-2

2 Egg Scales On top is the Reliable Egg Scale and it has a brass tag identifying it. It hails from LA. In front is the ???? and it still has about 90% of its paper label. Egg scales are a favorite collecting category for Kitchen collectors and after buying one or more of the reproduction Jiffy-Ways being offered currently in every imaginable setting the hunt for genuine ones takes over and a real collection is begun and the hunt begins. There are hundreds of variations that can be found from overly designed and needlessly complicated, to the more simplistic like these. I just wonder who was weighing their eggs and why. The Perfect Patented Egg Cutting Guide What a stupid idea this thing was! A guide for making the perfectly level knife cut in the perfect place in the shell of your soft boiled egg. Another wacky idea that was granted a patent---this one on May 19, 1896. A copy of the very detailed directions on how to use it to "sever the shell neatly and remove the top of the egg without any muss" are included, which by the way refer to it as the "Yankee Egg Holder". It figures. Who else would care. Personally I avoid the problem by eating mine hard boiled. Click for Pic UNC-KIT-2
