Check protectors / writers are one of the most interesting & diverse office machines you can find to collect.   The earliest models were called check protectors and they punched or cut holes in the check creating "chad" to keep unscrupulous parties from altering the amount later and cashing say a 100 check for 1000.00 by adding a 0.  These earlier chad making models have a special feeling given the outcome of the Gore/ Bush fiasco and how "Chad" figured into that.  Later models switched over to ink as the medium and are referred to as  inkers.  These later models are much more common and can still be readily found.   The earlier punchers are becoming increasingly difficult to find and some are quite rare.

Wesley Check Protector   This one is a bit different from the larger models.  You spin the top to the right number and push the plunger down.  All of the patent info and name are on the bottom.  It is in nice condition and works as it should.

Novelty Paper Fastener Stapler  This is one of the first American Patented Staplers.  It is described and pictured on a couple of informational sites on the internet.  It also doubles as a paper clip.   The base is oftentimes offered as a rein holder when found without the plunger.  This one is complete, and unmarked.  On some the plunger is marked off in increments. You would load one staple at a time, and then if I understand it, you would have to fold over the legs yourself by pushing down on the plunger.  Thankfully stapler development did not stop here.

Bump Paper Fastener  The Bump is the more frequently seen version of the stapleless paper fastener that you find.  It uses the Cut, fold & tuck method and works well for a few sheets at a time.  A great idea from the past that just kind of faded away.  These are getting hard to find, and this one is pretty nice with just minor losses to the nickel.  It works well.
