French 12 Blade Blood Letting Scarificator
w/ Box
The idea of intentional bleeding to let the bad blood out
was an accepted and common practice in the the 19th century and earlier.
This 12 blade blood letting device known as a Scarificator is in very fine working condition and includes the box.
The box top is detached, but it is otherwise OK. Finding these with a
box is a real bonus as
they are very fragile and hard to find.
To operate you pull
the top lever back 2 clicks. At the first click the blades appear, and all
12 are here, clean, sharp and ready. The second click retracts the blades and
cocks it. You can adjust the depth of cut by turning the thumbscrew on
top. Put it up against the skin, usually an extremity such as the
foot, push the button on the side and it releases blades quickly to puncture
the skin creating a path for all the bad blood to escape, and to promote health. Thank
goodness we have pharmaceuticals and pills to cure our ills today.. A nice
early piece of medical technology.

Early
19th Century Doctors Medical Case w/ 16 Vials
This is a great early medical kit full of small glass
vials with different
chemicals, herbs, and "medicines" in them. All 16 of the spaces are filled with small glass vials.
Some of the vials are empty, and others have quite a bit of powder /
medicines still in them.
There is a fold out storage area along the back edge to
store paper or notes. The small provenance
card with the name and info about the doctor was stored there. (See other
Pics).
The file card states that this belonged to and was used by Dr.
John King in the 1830's. I found a Bio on a Dr. John King at a website
having to do with herbal products, and this could well be the same Dr.
although I found no mention of the second name Cowens there. Here is that link
if you care to read that
http://www.henriettesherbal.com/eclectic/alkaloids/alkaloids-biographies.html
Some of the vials are marked with tiny writing that looks to be Latin or
Doctorese that I can not make out. The case is made of hand
stitched soft and supple leather and is lined on the inside with a finer smoother layer of
the same. It is in overall great condition.
A nice
early piece of American medical history.

19th Century 12 hole Brass Suppository Mold
Looks
like a bullet mold, but it is a medical related tool. This is an early brass mold for medicines and drugs
before the day of pill making machines. The local pharmacist would mix
up a special potion or formula fill the mold, compress it and then fold it
open to let the 12 suppositories out. Ready to go.

Dental Key w/ 4 Different Jaws
Dentist dental keys were designed much like a basin wrench to get at those hard to
reach nuts under a sink. Dental Keys or tooth extractors worked on the same
principle. Latch the swivel jaw around the tooth, somehow, give a bit
of a twist in the right direction to tighten it up, and then pull down
hoping it does not slip, or crack and break the tooth. Fast and no
doubt painful, but what were the choices?. Oh
my goodness that must have hurt before the days of Novocain.
This one has 4
different jaws with different sizes or radiuses to fit all the many
different sizes and shapes of the patients teeth. They are usually
found with just one. There is a small chip out of the rosewood handle
but it is otherwise in fine condition. No wonder people fear
dentists, it is probably a genetic fear instilled in their genes after their
earlier relatives subjected themselves to this treatment.

Dental
PluggingTool w/ Numerous Patents
This type of dental tool was used by dentists to pack
various materials into holes in, or around teeth. It seems it took a
number of small modifications to get this one just right as there are at
least 8 different patent dates stamped into it and the serial # is only 751.
The initials B. D. M. Co at the top stand for Buffalo Dental Manufacturing
Co. an outfit that is still in business. I found the
patent for this one time, but incredible as it seems could not find it a few
moments ago.
This overall condition is nice, and it is a very
precisely made device.

The Owen Belt /
Early Electrical / Medicinal
Battery Operated Quack Device
The designer / marketer of this electrical battery
operated cure all device appears to have been trying to play to 2 different belief sets
here.
The decoration on the belt is native American Indian themed to play to the sense of holistic or natural cures that Indians were famous for. This concept was joined with the new emerging
electrical technology and was offered as a cure-all for all sorts of
ailments. Strap it on and it would cure all manner of ailments, or so
the developer claimed. In looking this up I found that the maker went a
little too far in his claims, and ended up in jail for fraud and using the
PO for delivery of something that was not all that he claimed.
Charlatans these days are a bit more careful in the promises they make when
offering today's version of these. There are numerous example of ads for this outfit
being offered on eBay. The belts themselves turn up much less often.
It
has a series of discs to transfer the electrical healing powers to the user.
The batteries are
still here, although I doubt they will take charge anymore. Take a look at all the pics. It will make for an interesting display
piece, and is a testament to those famous sayings about Americans buying
most anything and believing the hype that preceded it. The
writing on the battery packs is still in very good condition. You can
read most of the info on them, including the 1897 patent date.
A nice
early piece of QUACK medical history.

Johnson & Johnson Dental Floss Dispenser
This is a great piece for the dental / medical display or
as a gift for your favorite dentist or dental hygienist. It is also another example of no new ideas. The condition of
the glass enclosure is super with no
chips or cracks. The cutter works well. We actually have this in
the bath and use it there occasionally.. Dentists say floss should be used every
day, and that flossing is necessary for good dental health and they have
been pushing that idea for a long time. I just wonder why 25 yards of
string costs so much.. A neat piece that can be used and displayed
at the same time.

Renu-Life Violet Ray Magical Cure-All
This electrical quack device probably dates from the 20's or so. If you
have never seen or tried one you would be impressed by the show it puts on
and the feeling it gives off when used.
I guarantee you would feel different after a treatment or two as well
whether it will cure you is another question.
It would seem all that tried and felt it did not whip out the money
to buy one as they are actually quite hard to find these days. Probably
because the operator turned it up to high and it hurt more than it helped.
It has that potential, and I can testify to that. This is actually a
super deluxe model with more wands and probe than usual, and more
adjustments than you usually find in the entry level model. Simple models
came with just a couple wands, while I have seen models with over 20 also
There are attachments
in this one for all different parts of the body. a comb for the hair / scalp,
one that will wrap right around your finger.
A curve for the knee or elbow.
A couple that look like probes of some sort, and we will let you use your
imagination for where to use those. There is one that seems to have blown up as
well. It also has two settings for intensity and type of ray or
power. Probably explained in full in the instructions, but I can guess
that negative ions for one type of ailment, and positive for another.
Oh, it does work, and is operational if the one you were
using has finally given it up and you do not want one of the new versions
being sold on eBay. As with the slogan no new ideas, it seems old
ideas never die either.
