1st Model Wooden Case "ShoeBox" Comptometer
Adder / Calculator The serial # on
this 1st model Comptometer is 2190. It is stamped into the metal cover
over the counter area near the middle. These early wooden case
comptometers
were offered beginning in 1887 and were sold through 1903. During that period a little over
6,000 were produced. After that the machine was cased in a metal
housing. The basic idea remained pretty much the same while going through a number of
minor cosmetic changes over the years.
There is a very
informative and worthwhile site that details the history, design, operation, and
other info about these machines on the internet. It can be found at www2.cruzio.com
. This 1st Model Comptometer is listed there along with the other known wood case
examples that have turned up. Known wood case models number under 100
according to this chart. This example came from at descendant of the original inventor / maker
whose name was Felt.
All of the main keys seem to operate
as they should. There are none that are stuck. By manipulating the key strokes
I can get it to zero
out, but the black knob on the side which is supposed to zero it does not
turn or operate. The wooden return lever moves but does not seem to do
anything. In general when pushing the main keys it seems to
carry over pretty good, except for the last column which seems to skip or
overcount at times. The main parts of the case are in Mahogany and the
base appears to be a softwood like pine. The outer case is in very nice
condition and looks to be original finish. The bottom cover door is
missing. A new panel could easily be fabricated if wanted.
These wooden case comptometers only appear on the market occasionally.
Some have been known to sell in the $4000 - $6000 range, and we have this
one priced to reflect the minor operational issues mentioned above.
A rare piece that will be a welcome addition to the advanced collection of
early American calculation devices

Comptometer
Adder / Calculator The Comptometer
Adder / Calculator is one of the most commonly seen and well know of all calculators.
The first models were housed in a wooden case and are quite hard to find, but
these later models in tan / brown metal cases are quite common and abound.
This one is in pretty nice cosmetic condition, but is being offered as just
a shelf / display piece. They make for a nice display and speak to how far along
we have come since these were phased out by more advanced adders and calculators.

Adder / Calculator Here is
a different one. I flunked non Euclidian geometry, and did not do much
better when they had tried to explain base 5 math before that but that is what this seem
to be. It looks like it can carry numbers from one column to the next,
and none makes any sense to me. It says it was made in Japan, perhaps it is
for counting Yen. Different.

I remember I use to try and divide Pie and have it end.
I flunked higher math because I was doing that and not listening to what they

Curta
Type 1 Calculator This Type 1 Curta
calculator is serial number is 51545. The Curta calculator
was invented by Carl Herzstark while imprisoned in a German concentration camp during
World War II. On the bottom of the calculator is says "System Curt Herzstark, Made
in Liechtenstein, by Contina AG Mauren, Type 1 No 51545. Case dimensions
are approximately 4 5/8" tall by 2 1/4" diameter. Inside of case has both foam pads
to protect the device during transport.
This interesting design calculator was the top of
the line and immensely popular before the advent of the electronic handheld calculator.
Their introduction and development made this technology obsolete in the early
70's. It took a few more years for them to be recognized
as the collectible pieces they are today in scheme of things.
This example is in
good condition and operates flawlessly. The previous owner was a surveyor
and the body is marked 6 over 3-4798 with an electric pen in the side as shown in
the Pics below. Otherwise the body is very nice and shows no wear or tear.
The metal case does show a lot of scuff marks with the black anodize finish
rubbed off the high points. Again the operation is flawless though, and this
one could be easily put back into service at rally events or in the field with a
surveyor.
