Early Electric Motors / Fans / Light Bulbs / Radios
Quack Machines & Other Early Electric Devices

Western Electric 12 Tank Electric Desk FanWestern Electric 12" "Tank" Electric Desk Fan  Western Electric was a maker of telephones and telegraphy.  They did not make fans, they simply marketed others with their name applied.  I believe this was made by Westinghouse.  They call these electric fans Tanks because of the size and weight of the electric motor.  It is a good choice, they were built like a tank and will run forever.  This one is sitting in my window and I still fire it up a few times a year when it gets really hot outside and in.  Even hot air moving by feels good in a "dry heat" like here.

This early electric fan has a stamped badge which means it is an later version while those with cutout badges are a bit earlier.  This style motor superseded the earlier Pancake motors that fans had.  It is in cosmetically pretty nice condition.  It has 95% of the original paint, and the guard is OK .  The blades are straight.  It runs.  The switch works but it needs a new cord from it to the head as I have had to tape this one to keep it from shorting the cotton covering is so bad.  .

This early electric fan is c.1912.  It  has a cutout badge which means it is an earlier version while those with stenciled badges are a bit later.  This "tank" style motor superseded the earlier Pancake motors that most fans had.  It has 95% or more of the original paint, and the guard is nice .  The blades are straight.  It runs well.  The switch works and the cords running to the head and the wall cord both look original and good.

Emerson 16 Inch 6 Blade Electric Desk FanEmerson 16" 6 Blade Electric Desk Fan  This Emerson fan runs like a top. It operates on all three speeds and just hums along but the arm for the oscillator is broken. The other detraction is the base got wet and there is almost no paint left there after I cleaned it.  The top portion is fine and original.  The switch is OK.  A nice graphic fan that will look great after a paint job, at a great price.

Hamilton Beach 1920's Electric Desk FanHamilton Beach 1920's Electric Desk Fan   This is a great looking small vintage electric desk fan.  It is nickel plate over cast iron, and the plating is in super condition and should buff out nicely if that is the look you want.  I think it looks great the way it is.  I suppose one would call it Art Deco era or look with the style of the sloped square base. It runs well but the screw holding the cage and motor housing on one side is stripped.  Looking inside I see the threaded boss is broken off.  This does not affect use or look, it is just loose.

These date from the 20's or so when Hamilton Beach was producing a number of products for the new emerging consumer class in America.  They are probably best known for their kitchen mixers, but they also made a number of other electrical appliances.   A nice looking fan for the collection, or early decor look.

Emerson 1/4 Horse Power Electric MotorEmerson 1/4 Horse Power Electric Motor  I believe this dates from just after the turn of the century.  From a time when the rating of a motor meant something, and its weight probably directly proportional to its power and the horses weight as well.  This thing weighs close to 80lbs and looks like it would run all day long.  The switch on this antique electric motor looks to be an aftermarket kill switch.  It has a great look, and runs like  top. .

Antique Electric Sewing Machine Motor w/ RheostatAntique SO-EZ Electric Sewing Machine Motor w/ Rheostat by Hamilton Beach  This set-up reminds me of the situation I am in where I am being sent a black box  to make it possible to receive TV signals after they change them to all digital.

Electricity had come to America, but what was the housewife to do with her trusty hand crank or treadle sewing machine.  Upgrade of course.  These small electric motors with a foot powered rheostat were offered to the consumer who had a treadle or hand crank sewing machines and had invested a lot of money in them and would not buy one of the new fangled electrics

I had one of these once that was patented in the 1880's and bolted to the machine instead of the wheel and crank.  That was a quite rare little piece. This later model is more universal and has a rubber pulley that would run against the sewing machine wheel to get things going.  From the looks of it and the condition the wife decided to stick with hand or foot power, or hubby got her one of those real electrics the next year. Overall it is in great condition, and I suspect the wife just continued to treadle away and this sat in the closet for 75 years or so. Oh, Final thought. The converter box for my TV did not work.

Vintage Ozone Generator / MachineVintage Ozone Generator / Machine When electricity first became commercially available a lot of people jumped on the wagon to go along for the ride.  Some people were taken for a proverbial ride.  The scammers & schemers hooked onto this novel new thing, and milked it.  They are still at it today.  The number of quack and cure-all machines based on using electricity, and it wondrous powers is mind-boggling and they are still coming up with them.   No new ideas,   As an added bonus, this has a fan in it to blow all that good ozone around.

Vintage General Electric GE Bulb HeaterVintage General Electric GE Bulb Heater When fired up these unusual electric heaters give off a warm orange glow and all the heat you could ask for.  They really does throw off a nice warm heat.   You can light one, two, or all three bulbs with the switch, and then. watch the meter go round with original bulbs installed.. The original bulbs were 500 watts each, but I have installed new 23 watt energy savers.  Although not quite a graphic, they look and work great.  The copper flash finish is in nice condition and this will be a welcome addition to the collection of times past.

T. A. Edison Battery Powered Electric Fan MotorT. A. Edison Battery Powered Electric Fan  The Edison Electric Fan derives its name from Thomas Alva Edison the inventor and patent holder for this design electric fan motor.  These early electric fans were powered by 6 volt DC batteries. Edison fans and motors were one of the first commercially viable uses of electricity sold and utilized in America. It is a historically significant piece of electrical apparatus.

These motors were offered as a fan, with or without a cage, or as just a simple motor.  They could be had with a different base than the tripod fan base seen here, mounted on a board, or  there was also a very desirable version of this fan offered with a wall-mount base.

This fan motor is in nice condition and shows minimal amounts of wear and minor paint chips.  It is not a high gloss pant, but I think it is original.    The brass ID tag on the top is present with a serial number of 15052 which i believe  would be right near the end of its production period.  .  The copper strip brushes look original and good.  I do not see anything wrong with the windings.  It will look even better cleaned up a bit more.  A very nice example of a very hard to find fan motor.
