K & E / Keuffel & Esser Thatcher #4012 Slide Rule /
Calculator This is a nice but well used
Thatcher's calculator / slide rule. The famous Thacher calculator with its near unique
sliding drum design has scales totaling over 30' long. if laid out in a line The inventors name
is really Thacher, but it was mis-spelled on almost all versions that K & E
offered, hence the
use of two different spellings here.
Thatcher slide rules were first
patented in England in 1881 and were an immediate success with the
scientific and engineering communities. K & E bought the rights to produce
them, and initially Stanley of England produced them in England before K & E
moved production to the states near the turn of the century. .
The serial # on this instrument is 4252 and the box and instrument have the
same number . The overall condition of the
rule itself is good with no chips or damage to the scales to speak of.
There are just a few small patches of brown spots, most no larger than pin heads
on the outer scales. Most of the scales are a light mellow tan / yellow that is
normal. The inner scales on the drum are very nice as well with no damage
or lifting. The instructions on the base are worn but present. The
mahogany box is OK noting the crack along the bottom front edge.
It has its original finish. There are no names carved
into the box or base of the calculator itself..
A nice example of this rare and interesting calculating slide rule priced to
sell..

French Circular Calculator / Slide
Rule
This unusual French sliderule dates from just after the
turn of the century. I could turn up little information on it with Google
searches. I assume the name is Le Calculator as seen in the right corner.
The tag in the bottom right gives a company name that again did not show up
in a Google search. That is where the serial # is. It has a very low
serial # of 546. The calculator is mounted to a wooden frame, and the
background is a plastic material that is oftentimes called ivorine. It was
a material that did not have good movement characteristics, and in
situations like this oftentimes cracked or chipped where attached. The
face of the slide rule is nice and was protected by a clear plastic window
that is wavy, but OK. The arm which you read the calculations from is
articulated such that it can follow the spiral lines on the face thus
enhancing or magnifying its capabilities. An interesting calculator.

Drum Calculator / Sliderule This large
cylindrical slide rule / calculator is a Swiss idea that was produced just
after the turn of the century up until about 1920. They came in a few
different configurations and with different bases or covers. Note in the
other pics how it is able to swing up to be like a Fuller. This one has a
set of instructions on the base and a second revolving reference /
information area as seen in the bottom pic.

Precise
Circular Adder / Calculator I can find no mention of this
adder / circular slide rule with a Google search. There are a series
of arms below the steel rod, but I do not see what they do. It says it hails from
St. Louis and looks to be from just after the turn of the century to me. This
unusual circular calculator is something new to me.

Gestation
& Farming Circular Calculator This is an interesting circular
calculator. I am not sure of the story behind these, but you can find them
with various company names and promotions for different farming products.
They were a well made product, and most have held up well over the years.
This example is in very nice condition with one scratch that can be seen in the
pics.
The condition can also be explained by the fact that a calculator
for the gestation period for different animals for a working farmer is similar to
the saying, "if you need to ask you probably do not need to know". I could
find nothing under the planting info that warned about, or took into consideration,
what the weather was that week, or had been, when computing out when to plant,
and how long it would take. Different & Very Nice!!
