Antique & Vintage
Pin Cushion Sewing Clamps / Third Hands

Sewing birds / sewing clamps make for a great antique collectible.

Most of the antique sewing birds / sewing clamps listed on these pages originate from two different long time / old time collections of antique and vintage sewing clamps and antique sewing accessories.  There is a near endless variety and no one collection could ever have them all.  There is a collection of sewing clamps in Lincroft, NJ at Brookdale Community College's Monmouth Museum that numbers over 400 and another larger one that the Smithsonian has.

Sewing clamps / birds can be utilitarian and very plain and simple, or figural, very complex and decorative, or all manner of forms and combinations in between.  Each of the sale pages we have is focused on a different form or style, from figural birds, to other animals, to those made of ivory, or those with just simple clamps  and more.

Please be sure to visit all the different pages as there are many to see and we have broken them up into different categories.

Folky Painted Wooden Pincushion ClampFolksy Painted Wooden Pincushion Clamp   This is an interesting wooden tole painted pincushion clamp.  From the designs it looks to me like it could be American or it may be Scandinavian.  It is unusual in that on one side is a little round mirror.  The "trim" around the edge of the mirror has flaked off (even more is missing than what the picture shows).  It's a great looking piece of folk art as well as a great antique sewing collectible.

Antique Sewing Clamp PincushionAntique Sewing Clamp Pincushion  This is a very early pincushion sewing clamp that dates from the early 19th century.  There is some minor rust, and it has not been cleaned or polished.  It is a nicely crafted steel pin cushion with a hook incorporated into the bottom thumbscrew to help hold work like netting, the idea being you could tie off your work to this hook allowing the pin cushion to be used to hold needles or pins.   A nice added  touch.   It is about 5 1/2" tall, and the pin cushion about 2" diameter.

Antique Sewing Clamp Pincushion w/ Wooden Frame PincushionAntique Sewing Clamp Pincushion w/ Wooden Frame Pincushion   This is an unusual example with a wooden framed box with a red velvet cushion attached to the steel C-clamp. The idea with these was you could either pin your work to the pin cushion to act as a third hand, or you had more than one clamp and this simply acted as an area to keep and organize your pins and needles.   It is about 4 1/2" tall, and the pin cushion box is about 2" x 4".

Antique Stone Decorated Sewing Clamp Pincushion Antique Stone Decorated Sewing Clamp Pincushion  This is a very unusual design sewing clamp / pincushion.  The bottom thumbscrew has an inset gemstone as does the front face of the clamp portion.  The rock there is inscribed, but I can not make out the name.  The entire body has hand cut file worked ridges on the outer face.  It looks great.  The pin cushion is original, and sits in a scalloped tray that is approx 1 1/4 x 2".  A very rare and unusual example.  Highly recommended.

Antique Steel Sewing Clamp PincushionAntique Steel Sewing Clamp Pincushion  Even though this example looks to be very simple and utilitarian, a lot of work went into the making of and decoration for it.   It is about 5" tall and the pincushion is about 1 1/2" diameter.  All of the edges of the clamp portion have heavy chamfers which one would assume were done by hand with a file.  The turn screw is nicely turned and the bottom has a pleasing shape and design.  All original and ready for the collection.

Cut Steel / Decorated Antique Sewing Clamp Pincushion w/ HookCut Steel / Decorated Antique Sewing Clamp Pincushion w/ Hook  Cut steel is an art form that is most closely associated with France and England.  It can date from as early as the 17th century.  Sewing clamps in this form are very rare.  This one is all original and in super nice condition.

The pin cushion looks to be original and sits in a round bottom cut steel decorated trough.  That is held up by a finely turned stepped post.  The outside of the clamp portion is also decorated with cut steel buttons and flowers.  The bottom heart shaped thumbscrew is very nicely done as well.  It also has an unusual spiral cut thread which serves to double the speed when turning it to open or close.  A very hard to achieve detail.

The final feature is the hook that can be used to tie off or hold your work acting as a third hand if you will.  At first glance a simple and utilitarian example, but upon examination a wonderful piece of cut steel, and a very early and unusual sewing clamp.

Antique Brass Sewing Clamp Pincushion w/ Special FeaturesAntique Brass Sewing Clamp Pincushion w/ Special Features  This is an odd looking sewing clamp / pin cushion.  It resembles an ancient building with pillars or a monument and in a sense that is what it is because in addition to the look and the pincushion, this unusual clamp also has a secret area that holds the remains of an old photographic image and a mirror.  Just below the pincushion the top unscrews to reveal a mirror in the top half, and in the bottom one can see the faint outline of an facial image.  The glass image is held in with a threaded ring which unscrews.  The image has mostly disappeared, but a faint image / outline is still there.  It must have been an ambreotype as it is almost completely faded away over the years.  This unusual piece stands just about 6" tall, and the pin cushion / image are is about 2" in diameter.  Unique!!!
