Antique & Vintage
Stylized Critter Figural Sewing Clamps
Sewing birds / sewing clamps make for a great antique
collectible.
Most of the antique sewing birds / sewing clamps listed on these
pages originate from two different long time / old time collections of antique
and vintage sewing clamps and antique sewing accessories. There is a near
endless variety and no one collection could ever have them all. There
is a collection of sewing clamps in Lincroft, NJ at Brookdale Community College's
Monmouth Museum that numbers over 400 and another larger one that the Smithsonian
has.
Sewing clamps / birds can be utilitarian and very plain and
simple, or figural, very complex and decorative, or all manner of forms and
combinations in between. Each of the sale pages we have is focused on
a different form or style, from figural birds, to other animals, to those made
of ivory, or those with just simple clamps and more.
Please be sure to visit all the different pages as there are
many to see and we have broken them up into different categories.
Antique
Stylized Hi-Tail Etch Decorated Sewing Bird / Clamp with Pincushion
This sewing clamp is about 8 1/2" tall and 5" or so from end to end.
It is constructed of heavy steel that was formed, filed, polished, and ETCHED.
It is a rare bird. The outside faces of the clamp, bracket, and body are
etched with a design of flowers and leaves. It is hard to make out in
some areas and very bold in others. I have never seen this on a sewing
clamp
before.
It is very unusual. Be sure to look at all the pictures.
The spring is good, and it grips fabric just fine. It is a great looking
antique sewing bird with fine detailing. The pincushion on top is original
and shows some wear. My picture makes it look brighter than it actually
is. The thumbscrew has great detail. It has been cleaned and polished
and this sewing clamp is in remarkably good condition and is a very nice design.
Highly recommended!!

Antique
Machinist Made Sewing Clamp w/ Pincushion
This unusual sewing
clamp was machine made by a highly skilled craftsperson / machinist. The
side is stamped with a number 1909 which could very well be the date, although
it could date from earlier than that as well. The clamp is in an amazing
state of preservation and still retains nearly all of its original lacquer finish.
It is a wonderful golden color. The top pincushion is original but did
not wear nearly as well and could do with a new outer covering being applied.
It is about 8 1/2" tall, and the pin cushion is about 1 1/2" diameter.
A very nice looking and graphic sewing clamp.

Early
Blacksmith Made Figural Sewing Clamp w/ Double Pincushion
This
is a very early example and has characteristics that indicate it was blacksmith
made. It was not cast or machined. It appears it was pounded out
and worked from solid stock. The pincushions are held by rod stock that
have filework decorations near the tops. The shallow bowls holding the
red velvet pincushions appear to be copper and may have been coins at one time.
The critter has a very nicely done reverse curled tail, and the file marks are
clear almost as if left to represent scales. At the thumbscrew the spiral
ball decoration is repeated from above. It is about 8 1/2" tall,
and about 5" across at the pin cushions. An interesting and very early example.

Brass Stylized Sewing Clamp
This is an unusual stylized sewing
clamp. The base clamp is a well cast brass that has been gilded or finished
with a high golden luster. On top of that is a decorative piece that looks
like a shield. It is brass, but has aged and has a darker Patina than
below. The top clamp is brass as well and the decoration on the top is
an arrow with feathers engraved into the top. The spring to operate it
is OK. It is a finely crafted and sturdy example that is about 7" tall.
A very nice piece of mid 19th century to Victorian era workmanship!!

Primitive
Steel Figural Sewing Clamp w/ Pincushion
This is a very
early and unusual figural sewing clamp. It has a wide toothed head
and teeth are cut in to reveal a zig-zag along the side of the mouth.
It is a very unusual design in that the the top half has a cutout that rides
around the pincushion's turned riser. The spring is set in reverse of
what one would expect, and to operate you push down on the tail. The thumbscrew
shows file work marks, and it has a sure grab fitting on the end to insure a
good grip on the table. Note that the bearing surface for the clamp on
the table is a cut out heart. Also note the chamfered edges on the C portion,
and the barrel decoration at the mid point. A very special clamp that
is surely a one of a kind. It is a finely crafted and sturdy example that
is about 7" tall, and a bit over 5" long. A very nice piece of early 19th
or even 18th century workmanship!!

it. The

Blacksmith Made Antique Iron Sewing Clamp
This antique
sewing clamp is fashioned from forged iron and a lot of handwork went into finishing
and fashioning the different pieces. It has an interesting clamp system with
an eccentric toothed wheel that swings around to act as the clamp.
It is just about 6" tall and 5 1/2" wide. Note the bearing plate is a
cut-out heart shape, as is the thumbscrew. Someone has applied two foreign
coins to the screw to spread the pressure when using it. This is a good
looking sewing clamp with a good patina that is ready for display.
