Most of the sewing related antiques you will find on this and our other
Sewing Accessories pages
originated from Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan, and were part two large and diverse antique sewing
collections we are handling on consignment. This is the first time most
of these pieces have been out on the market in many years.
Empire
Period Rosewood Sewing Box This is a very nice, and very early,
rosewood veneer sewing box. I believe it dates from the mid 19th
century. It measures approx 12" across the front. It is red
velvet-lined on the inside. The bottom is veneered in what looks to be
tiger grained maple and matches the piece on the top. It is in very
nice original condition and will make a beautiful accent piece and will
display nicely. This and most of the other sewing related accessories
you will find on this page originated from Pennsylvania, and were part
of a large and diverse collection that decorated the collector's sewing
room.

American
Folk Art"Tramp Art" Chip-Carved Sewing Box This is
a great piece of early Americana / Folk Art. It is unusually colorful
and has almost a holiday feel to it with the reds, greens and golds. Perhaps
it was originally given as a gift during the holidays by the anonymous maker.
It measures just under 12" across. The lid is hinged and opens to reveal
a little oval mirror on the underside of the lid and several interior compartments.
Note the red velvet pin cushion on the top, indicating it was made for the seamstress
in the family. That same red velvet fabric was the material used for the
red-colored inlay that you see, while the greens and golds are painted, and
all completely original and un-restored. The detailing is meticulous,
particularly the tiny keyhole. The came from the same collection as the
rest of the boxes we have listed here. Interesting and very nice!

Wooden Sewing Box / Thread Holder This elegant little walnut
decorated sewing box measures approx 8" x 7" and is 6" tall. Note the
detailed trim work at the base and where the second tier attaches. The
bottom of the drawer is hand planed with bevels to fit the rabbited joints,
just like the construction of fine furniture of the day. Note that there
are 14 small brass lined holes around all sides of the upper section where you
could pull thread through. There are 20 or so spools of thread included.
This piece looks to date from the Victorian era, and is a very nice accent piece,
and perfect for use as well.

Early
Wooden Miniature Chest This elegant little walnut decorated
chest measures approx 17" x 11" and is 12" tall. It does not have anything
specific to do with sewing, but was part of the collection we are handling,
and would make a great piece to store fabric pieces in. Note the detailed
trim at the corners and on the panel faces. It appears that this piece
has been restored, and that the bottom and feet have been replaced at a later
time. The top is nicely done with a marquetry style of contrasting colors.
It has a repair in one corner by the hinge. Even with the
repairs this is a very nice and graphic looking piece.

Raised
Panel Walnut Sewing Box / Cabinet This beautiful and elegant
antique sewing box or cabinet is period and has very nice chip carved decorations
on the raised panels and backsplash. It dates from the 1880's or so, and
is handmade. It measures just over 13" across the top, and 20 some inches
tall to the top of the headboard. It is beautifully crafted and looks
like a piece of fine miniature furniture. In nice overall condition, there
is minor damage / chips at the front edge of the lid and deterioration to the
velvet fabric of the pin cushion. The backsplash has separated along a
joint line, but it can be fixed easily enough. An unusual and beautiful
vintage sewing accessory!
