Antique Sewing Machines
"Spenser" Travel Size
/ Child-SizeToy Antique Sewing Machine "TSM" The Spenser Sewing Machine Co. hailed from Boston, MA and
New York, NY. They referred to this as their "Automatic Hand Sewing
Machine". It carries several patent dates from 1900, 1901, and 1902 and is
a extremely well-made little sewing machine.
We had another of these
in the box, that had phrases like "The sewing machine for summer
sewing. It is just the machine to take to the seashore, country, or
mountains." on the label. Ads for this machine have been found in old
Harper's magazines and offering it for the price of $10.00 at the same time
that smaller cast iron toy machines cost $5.00 or less, so we can assume
that this would be a far rarer machine than many of those cheaper and more
commonly bought models.
This machine is fairly complex in design,
and measures just 9" tall. It was obviously meant to pose serious competition to other
small sewing machines of the day that were marketed as travel and mending
machines. It was also small enough to be considered a toy, although
larger and more complex than say the Smith & Egge or others.
This example is in
good
condition. There are wear spots on the sew plate where the name and
patent info is. There is also paint loss to the base where the clamp
would attach it to the table. All in all though it is pretty nice, and
a much rarer machine than some other similar ones. A top
shelf collector piece!

German
Muller #15 Cast Iron Toy Sewing Machine / TSM
Muller was the largest and best known of the German toy sewing machine
makers. They and Casige dominated the market. This is a medium size machine compared to the #12 which was
larger, or the #20 which was quite a bit smaller. This example is in
pretty nice condition still retaining most of its original paint and decoration.
It is a little dull, and some of the gold highlighting is gone, but would brighten up with a
light clean and wax. A nice
machine!
