An incredible array of pump style vacuums were introduced and marketed to the American consumer before the use of electricity became widespread. Most of these vacuums were foolish ideas, and many are found in pretty good condition because the wife saw through the scam after hubby brought it home for the anniversary gift, birthday, or other special occasion all happy with himself, and she went back to her broom and dustpan to get the job done.
It was not until the use of electricity became widespread that they stopped making these for the gullible public. Produce and consume was the idea even back then.
An interesting note is how many of these you can find of the exact same design with different names or logos on them. Each manufacturer when on the brink of Bankruptcy must have sold out to the next wide eyed entrepreneur with more money and energy than brains, and production resumed with a new name but same idea. They make for a great display or accent piece, and are generally conversation stoppers as people look them over in wonderment.
The
Victor Pump Vacuum
This early pump vacuum is in great condition
and has about the best color I have seen on one of these in a long time. This vacuum
is one of the examples of one that you see in different colors and with different

Two
Pump Vacuums
The vacuum on the left operated a bit differently from
the norm. While pushing it along you grabbed the handle and pumped the entire
bellow up and down while navigating it along. It must have been a popular
idea as you can find this one pretty often, and with different names, but not in
this condition.
On the right is the Home Vac. It has a new and different idea
where you used both hands to help get the suction going while getting a workout
at the same time.

5 Different Rug / Pillow Beaters
Every house had at least one.
These came in many different forms and shapes. Some are quite rare, others
are very common. They were used at the end of the season to beat the
dirt out of the carpets that had been tracked in during the winter that the vacuums
above did not manage to pick up.

Tacker
Back when it was common practice to pull the
carpets every spring and beat them or put them up for the summer.
That explains the plethora of different style carpet tacking machines that can
be found. This is a small patented model probably for runners or stairs.
It came in two versions, this the upgraded one with a tack holder and plunger to
hit, and the lesser model without those features. Neat!!

Cast Iron Washboard / Rub Board Talk about character!
This washboard / scrub board looks like it has been through the wringer (pardon
the pun)! It dates from the late 1800’s and is made with an unusual cast
iron ridged board set into its wooden frame. The circular hole you see
is typical of all cast iron washboards I have ever seen, made that way to allow
the water and suds to drain through to the other side. Unfortunately this
example has also suffered a crack across the width of the board. No doubt about its authenticity
and it is priced to account for the “character”.

is not the standard one you see. It has a very unusual pattern to the
ribs. No doubt the claim was it did a better job cleaning than the

The
Udder" Plunger Type Washer This one looks like a cow udder to
me, or udderly ridiculous. The designer was certainly a believer in the more
is better line of thought. What a crazy looking idea. It is not marked,
but almost has a manufactured look to it. I would almost think it was shaker
except it is a bit to much. Each of the udders or plungers is spring loaded
to give it that extra cleaning action so sought after. A great piece in original
red wash finish. It appears that the owner cut down the handle a few
inches.

Plunger Vented Washer / Agitator This style agitator was
designed to be used in a wash boiler or tub, and a simple up and down motion was
employed. It is set up with a series of vents and passages with the final
release hole in the top middle with a little shields to direct the soapy water back
down and keep from splashing the user. It has patent info and locations on the body
from the 1880's.
