Antique Cast Iron WashboardPrimitive Cast Iron Washboard / Rub Board    Talk about character!  This washboard / scrub board looks like it has been through the wringer (pardon the pun)!  It dates from the late 1800’s and is made with an unusual cast iron ridged board set into its wooden frame.  The circular hole you see is typical of all cast iron washboards I have ever seen, made that way to allow the water and suds to drain through to the other side.  Unfortunately this example has also suffered a crack in the board.  No doubt about its authenticity and it is priced to account for the “character”.

Primitive Antique Washer"The Udder" Plunger Type Washer   This one looks like a cow udder to me, or udderly ridiculous.  The designer was certainly a believer in the more is better line of thought.  What a crazy looking idea.  It is not marked, but almost has a manufactured look to it.  I would almost think it was shaker except it is a bit to much.  Each of the udders or plungers is spring loaded to give it that extra cleaning action so sought after.  A great piece in original red wash finish.

antique washerMilk Stool Washer   This bottom of this one resembles a milk stool, and the cows udders under it.  It was designed for use by large people as it it huge, and would take a lot of stamina to keep going.  This style washer is very early and probably predates most mechanical and later models.  I bet most teenagers today would not recognize it.

antique washerPlunger Washer / Vented / Agitator   This style washer was designed to be used in a wash boiler or tub, and a simple up and down motion was employed.  This unusual example is set up with a series of vents and passages to get things really worked up.   It has patent info, locations, and lots more info on the body.  It dates from the 1880's.  You need to look at the other pictures to get a sense of all the thought this fellow put into his design.  It is great and much morethan just a simple plunger!

Patented WasherDouble Plunger Vented Washer / Agitator   This style agitator was designed to be used in a wash boiler or tub, and a simple up and down motion was employed.  It is set up with a series of vents and passages with the final release hole in the top middle with a little shields to direct the soapy water back down and keep from splashing the user. It has patent info and locations on the body from the 1880's.

Laundry Mangle"The Household" Laundry Mangle  This wringer / mangle is in super condition and I doubt it was ever used. It is larger and heavier than typically seen. Over 2' across and at least 50 lbs.   Shipping it will run 100.00 or so I imagine.  It is sitting out of level because of the mounting bracket on the bottom.  There is no damage or problems.  A great reminder of times past that will look great on display if you have the room.

3clothespins.jpg (24651 bytes)Unusual Mechanical Antique Wooden Clothespins  These clothespins are unlike any I have ever seen.  Dating from the 1920's, the story goes that they were designed by a great-great cousin of the woman back East that I bought3clothespins2.jpg (24769 bytes) them from.  This fellow was obviously wildly creative, but like so many other inventors of his day he was a poor businessman.  Anyway, he took on a partner and together they applied for a patent on these clothespins.  The partner took off for California, and probably went on to a life of fame and fortune, or at the very least he enjoyed some real nice weather.  The cousin was left sitting in New Jersey with a bunch of wooden clothespins, which I now own!  The story is great, and the clothespins themselves are wonderful too.  They measure about 5" long and the way they work is that you squeeze the spring-loaded pin to open and release the "jaws" that would hold the article of clothing.  The third leg of the pin, which is tapered, hangs over the clothesline.  I have several of these antique clothespins available, and whether or not the patent was ever granted on them I do not know.  But my guess is that it is very possible they never went into widespread production, so these may be the only ones available.  I also have some repaired ones---can you imagine repairing a clothespin---so if you like examples of antiques that document that some people really did have too much time on their hands, be sure to inquire about those too!
