Surveyor's / Engineer's / Builders,
Wye, Railroad, Dumpy Levels & Alidades
Bradshaw's
Patent Sighting Level This sighting level is in super original
condition. Although the idea of using a wooden level as a sight level is
well known I have never seen this maker and set-up before, and a Google search
did not turn up anything on the inventor / patentee, Bradshaw, and just a few
entries on the English maker Harling of London. The level and the worm
drive adjuster are in near mint condition and still sport most of the original
finish. The cloth over board carrying case is nice as well. The
tripod is an odd offset affair and it has a tapered post at the top to receive
the level. This will display nicely, and is quite showy in its own right.

Stackpole & Bros Surveyor's or Engineer's 18" WYE or Y Level This Wye level is in
very nice
condition and has a great patina. This company which hailed form New York
was in business from the 1850's to just after the trun of th4e century.
Examples of their instruments are pretty hard to find.
Wye levels were used in situations where accurate long lines were shot. They make wonderful displays and are very graphic. This one stores in the same fashion as the last early wye level I had that was designated as a Railroad level. The lower leveling base is detachable and stored in the box that way. Later most levels were made to fit their boxes as one unit, others were made to travel in their boxes with the scope removed and set in its own carry spot. The box is present, and OK condition exhibiting just normal wear and tear that is to be expected from a 100 + year old used instrument. All in all a nice piece. K & E Surveyor's or Engineer's 18" WYE or Y Level This level is in good condition. The serial # is 38744 which would date this from 1920. Wye, Railroad and Dumpy style levels were used in situations where accurate & long lines were needed. They make a very graphic statement and these larger ones look when displayed with their smaller brethren or by themselves in a display or collection. This one stores in the same fashion as the last one I had that was designated as a Railroad level, but this one does not carry that stamp. It is interesting that very early instruments often had lower bases that were detachable and stored in the box that way. Later most levels were made to fit their boxes as one unit, and then for some reason some models were made to travel in their boxes with the scope removed and set in its own carry spot in the box as is the case with this instrument. The box is present, and in nice condition exhibiting just normal wear and tear that is to be expected from a used instrument. All in all a nice piece.
