Antique & Vintage
Full-Size and Child-Size
Flat Irons / Sad Irons / Pressing Irons

We are delighted to be able to offer for sale a great number of antique / vintage / and collectible sadirons originating from several great antique pressing iron collections we are Antique Monitor Ironhelping consigners sell.

One collection is focused on small and child-size sad or pressing irons, and includes many toy irons as well. Another includes antique and vintage irons from around the world, both large and small of all different styles.  In addition to collecting different sad irons another consigner's collection included a wide array of antique laundry and washing related collectibles that you will find listed on the  Americana PageBe sure to visit that page as well.

The consigners of these collections have shared great memories of how and where different irons were acquired, and how pleased they are that the sad irons they so lovingly collected and preserved are now going to find homes with another new generation of collectors. Removable Handle French Sad Iron

Please keep in mind that although it may seem like antique sad irons are common and easily found and that we have an awful lot of them for sale here, most of these antique irons are by no means frequently found or widely available these days.  These pressing iron collections were assembled over decades---for example the Lloyd collection was begun in the 1950's---and when these irons are gone we will not have more of this caliber until the next collection is offered to us to sell.

You will find an incredible variety of antique pressing irons offered by visiting all of the different iron pages and the iron pages we call back pages you will go to when you click the titles below!

We are offering an assortment of antique irons large and small that are sure to stand out in any collection.  Take a good look at the following irons.  They are not all your garden-variety doorstops or bookends, although you can use them for that if you want.

Many of the following irons have unusual and interesting functions, markings, or design features that set them apart from the norm and from what you typically find these days. Look for sadirons with unusual designs and interesting logos from varied makers, as well as irons with unusual patented features such as unique handle mechanisms or heat storage ideas.

 Child Size & Toy Irons

Way back when in early America Monday was designated as Washing and Laundry Day, and Tuesday was considered the designated Ironing Day.  Young girls Antique Child Size Ironshelped with the washing, ironing and household chores back then, and they were expected to learn to iron at an early age.

Many of these small pressing irons have unusual patented features and other design attributes that help make them a special and fun category of antiques to collect.  They give a vivid reminder of what was expected of America's children during this period, and they make for a great display of antiques because of their dainty size and graphic appearance.

Many small antique irons were specifically made as "toys" to help children learn by playing at this important task with mom.  Other little pressing irons or sadirons were made for laces and fancy work which their delicate little hands and hearts could handle while helping Mom with the day's chores.  These irons hold a special place in America's heritage and history, and are an important piece of Americas Miniature Enterprise Irons past, giving us a glimpse into what these earlier days were like.

At first glance these children's irons might be mistaken for their typical full-size counterparts, but their diminutive size and delicacy puts these antique child-size clothing irons in a special class of their own.

What could make a youngster of yesteryear feel more grown up or more important than being allowed to iron her doll clothes, her hair ribbons, or even the family clothing with her very own "real" iron, side by side with her Mom!  And how better to learn the fine points of someday providing her own future family with a wrinkle-free wardrobe than by being taught the lesson in the guise of childhood play. Child Size Antique Pressing Irons

Iron manufacturers of the day of course saw the marketing potential here with this younger audience, and like today's entrepreneurs they produced an incredible array of different choices for the child, and her Mom, to chose from.  Each manufacturer wanted their iron to be distinctive and appealing.  Take a look at the different handle styles.  Look at the differences in the ways the bases are designed.  Note the way the manufacturers decorated them and marked them in interesting ways with names and numbers that were sure to attract attention then, and still do with antique iron collectors and antique toy / doll / and bear collectors today.

Antique & Vintage
Electric Irons

Early electric irons are the hot (no pun intended) new category of pressing iron collecting.

The earliest and rarest examples of electric irons were patented and appeared on the market in the 1880's. The Carpenter Patent is credited to be the first patent, and it has been known to bring 5 figures in the right setting.   The rare and early ones are few and far between and very difficult to find.  Many Antique Electric Ironsof these earliest electrics have been known to sell for $1000 or more.

Most electric irons you find today date from after the turn of the 20th century, and these antique irons symbolize the very beginnings of the availability of household electricity and the transition into "modern" times for the American consumer.  I refer to electric pressing irons that followed in later decades as vintage irons.  These later irons were about showcasing appealing visual designs and had features like heat regulators and steam to the basic design.  There were some great retro designs from the 40's - 50's that are very desirable like the winged "Petipoint", the round Knapp Monarch, or Saunders colorful glass "Silverstreak" that come from this era.

There is also the whole line of electric "travel" irons that are becoming hard to find unless they are coming from a collection as the ones we are offering are.  In general most 20th century electric irons are pretty common and readily available unless found in exceptional condition and in their original boxes, but we have and are offering some pretty hard to find examples and some very appealing  vintage electric irons that originate from a couple of the collections we are handling.
