Antique & Vintage

Pressing Irons & Sad Irons

Our Antique Iron and Laundry sales pages are taking on a new look.  We are now offering for sale many antique and collectible irons and related laundry antiques originating from several collections large & small---one that focused on small and child-size irons, another that includes a wide array of unusual antique pressing irons and antique laundry / washing collectibles, and another that became so large it had to be pared down.

We are delighted to be able to offer you irons from these collections and we are proud to be able to participate in disbursing them for our consignors.

The most frequent comment we have heard from these consignors is how much they have enjoyed collecting their ironing related antiques over the years.  They have shared great memories of how and where different irons were acquired, and how pleased they are at the thought that the irons they so lovingly collected and preserved are now going to find new homes with another generation of collectors.

These collections were assembled over decades---for example the Lloyd collection was begun in the 1950's---and when these irons are gone we will not have more of this caliber until the next collection to be disbursed comes around.

We are offering an assortment of antique irons large and small that are sure to stand out in any collection.  Look for sadirons with unusual designs and interesting logos from varied makers, as well as irons with unusual patented features such as unique handle mechanisms or heat storage ideas.

You will find unusual shaped and special purpose antique pressing irons, including polishers, sleeve irons, hatters irons, flower irons, tailor's irons, as well as streamline and other electric irons.

Antique Sadirons / Flat Irons

Take a good look at the following irons.  They are not your garden-variety doorstops or bookends, although you may want to use them for that.  Each of the following irons has unusual and interesting functions, markings, or design features that set them apart from the norm and what you typically find these days. That is one ofthe main re4asons collect irons, the supply and different variations are about endless.

Most of these irons came out of several large and varied old time collections and are not the sort that you will likely find in the antique mall or at the local flea anymore.  When these irons are gone we won't have more until we help disperse the next collection.

Antique / Vintage Electric Irons

Early electric irons are the hot (no pun intended) new category of iron collecting.  The earliest and rarest examples of electric irons were first patented and appeared on the market in the late 1880's.  Most early electric irons you find today date from after the turn-of-the-20th-century, and these antique irons symbolize the very beginnings of the availability of household electricity and the transition into "modern" times.  The electric pressing irons that followed in later decades, what I refer to as vintage irons, were more about showcasing appealing visual designs and adding features like heat regulators and steam to the basic design.  There were some great designs that are very desirable like the Pettipoint, round Knapp Monarch or Saunders colorful glass "Silverstreak".  There is also the whole line of electric "travel" irons that can be found and in general are readily available.  In general most 20th century electric irons are pretty common and readily available unless found in exceptional condition and in their original boxes.

Special Purpose Ironing Devices

An iron for every purpose---in an era when everything had to be ironed manufacturers produced irons for every trade and every category of clothing.  Look here for sleeve irons, hatter's irons, tailor's irons, dressmaker's irons, artificial flower making irons, billiard table irons, and more.
