The idea of a tool used as an Adze have been known since the beginning of tool making. Carving out and shaping pieces of wood are about timeless. Over time their forms have changed to meet the needs of different users. These interesting and versatile tools are used in chair making and the furniture making trades as well as by wheel makers and other woodworkers. There were literally hundreds of different designs patented and offered over the years, and there is even a book on the subject that was written. Some are favored by users because of superior design, quality and usability. But there are also strange and unusual patented designs that would seem to be only suitable for the tool collector as I do not think they would hold up or be as accurate as say the Wood's Patent hollow auger which is so in demand.
