Millers Patent Planes & Stanley Plow & Combination Planes

Stanley tried a few different designs of metal bodied combination & plow planes before settling down and going with the #45 / 55 series of planes they are so well known for.  This series of planes would also include the skew cut #46 & 47 models as well as the light duty #50.  Stanley also offered the Millers Patent line of woodworking planes including the #41- #44 which were introduced in 1870, and phased out in the 1890's. They also made and offered the 141 and 143 plow planes for a longer period of time.   To learn all the history about the different models and types of # 45 & 55 planes one would ever need to know I recommend the great guide written and published by Dave Heckle past president of MWTCA.  The Millers Patent line of Stanley planes is discussed in length in Roger Smiths works on the subject or in John Walters out of print price guides.

Millers Patent Plow & Fillister Planes

Charles Miller 1872 Patent # 50 Bronze Improved Joiners Plow PlaneCharles Miller 1872 Patent # 50 Bronze Improved Joiners Plow Plane   There are just a handful of these rare planes known.  They were made in both iron and bronze / gunmetal as this one is.  The design for this style plane was patented by Charles Miller in 1872 and it was offered for just one year in the Russell & Irwin catalog of 1875.  Miller held other plane patents, and worked for Stanley for a short time prior to this. It is believed Stanley made the plane, but it was never offered in any of their catalogs.  Patrick Leach has a write-up on this plane on his website Blood & Gore, and Don Bosse also has a history  / bio on Miller on his website, both of which can be found with a Google search.  There is also info in Roger Smiths books.  Past auction results can be found in Clarence Blanchard's / Browns Tool Auction Catalogs.

The collector found this plane in California back in the 70's or early 80's.  At that time it was practically unheard of and he knew nothing about it.  It was missing the outer fence.  He found somebody that had an iron model, and borrowed that fence to have one made for his.  At the time he did not know that the fence for the iron model was different from the bronze one.  Fast forward 30 - 40 years during which time a few other examples have turned up in different tool auctions typically bringing anywhere from $15,000 - $23,000.   Prices have fallen off from the peaks, but it is still considered one of the premier planes that can be found.   Paul Hamler the well known master artisan in the tool world began making a full size, and miniature version of this plane. Examples of  both can be found on the market today, although they too are kind of hard to find.  This plane has been fitted with one of Hamler's incredibly accurate and detailed outer fences.  It is the proper size and design.  It fits perfectly, and looks great noting a slight color difference.  Everything else about this plane is original and in superb condition.  Rare & Very Nice!!

Stanley Miller Patent # 42 Bronze / Gunmetal Plow / Fillister PlaneStanley Miller Patent # 42 Bronze / Gunmetal Plow / Fillister Plane  This gunmetal 42 is as nice as one could ask for.  Includes 9 nice cutters.  Proper bronze / gunmetal fence, and also the straight iron fence.   Note also how nice the rosewood handle is.

Given the logo on the skate and the one piece fence screws, I believe this is a type 4 dating from 1875 - 1876.  Stanley developed and issued this line of planes known as Millers Patents # 41, 42, 43 and 44 after the short lived 50 they had offered for only one year about the same time.  This line was offered from approx. 1871 thru 1897 and then continued another 20 years when the # designation was changed to 141 - 143.

Stanley # 55 Combination Plane in Original BoxStanley # 55 Combination Plane in Original Box   This is a later model Stanley # 55 Combination Plane.  The plane itself, and the cutters are near mint and virtually unused.  I believe it dates from just before WWII from the logo on the skate and other features.  They made this unusual plane up to 1963 but if its features follow the 45 type study it would date from some period before that and closer to WWII.

This plane looks to have never been used very lightly if at all.  There is virtually no wear or tear from use.  The rosewood fences show little signs of ever having run against anything. Most all of the cutters look to be original grind and have original cosmoline or grease on them.  The box shows wear from sitting for so long. The corners of the outer box have ripped  Also one end of the cutter box is torn.  It is complete with its tower, cam, extra spurs, long and short rods, instructions.  You just do not find them this nice anymore.  Opportunity!!

Stanley # 55 Combination PlaneStanley # 55 Combination Plane   This is an earlier model Stanley # 55 Combination Plane w/ original wooden box / no lid (not shown).  The plane is dirty and missing a few screws and parts. Most notably the disc / nut on the inner fence and no short rods.  There are no casting problems, it is just dirty with dull or missing nickel.   The 4 boxes of cutters are near complete and many are unused / unsharpened.  It does have its tower, the cam, slitter & spurs. A good deal that can be made into a good user.
