Antique & Collectible Woodworking Planes
Patented / Unusual / Rare plus the Usual Fare

M.B. Tidey Patented July 4th 1854 Double Beveling PlaneM. B. Tidey Patented July 4th 1854 Double Beveling Plane  The Tidey Beveling Plane is one of the rarest and most unusual of all American Patented Planes. Only a handful of these planes are known.  The patent was granted on July 4th 1854.  The patentees name, NY location, and patent date info are stamped on the top curved brass piece.

I believe the record price at auction for one was close to 30K some years back.  Another example recently sold for 12K and while the ad for that one said flawless and used other superlative adjectives to describe its condition, the wood on this example actually looks much nicer than that one, or most of the other known examples, that can be viewed with a Google image search.

The body is Beech, and the arms, nuts, and washers are all Boxwood.  The Boxwood parts are all pretty nice and the Beech body has just a few minor scuffs.  The brass parts have a nice even patina, and have not been fiddled with or buffed.  This rare plane does have a couple easily restorable apologies.  One cutter is missing, and that side has a wedge with a different profile that fits well.  Also, the bottom brass piece of the front depth stop is missing. (see pic).  And finally there is another small brass piece and screw missing from the tail area.  Again, see the pics.  All of these minor issues would be relatively simple repairs to bring this rare piece back to its full glory.  An opportunity that will probably not repeat itself.

Fales Patent Combination Plow Bead & Molding PlaneFales Patent Combination Plow Bead & Molding Plane  Amos Fales of Denver, Colorado was granted two patents for his combination plane design beginning in 1882. Fales had his plane made by Otis Smith of Rockfall Connecticut who was a gun maker. Otis Smith is not the Smith of Smith & Wesson fame.

Production or more accurately, sales ended in 1917 or so.  The Fales Patent Plane has to be one of the wackiest ideas for a patented woodworking plane ever produced. The idea probably looked good and sounded good on paper, but the finished product was destined for failure. Mr. Fales had obviously never heard of the KISS concept of Keep it Simple Stupid before coming up with this idea. The plane has 2 bottoms and a cutter for almost every possible profile. I read that can equal upwards of 240 or so separate pieces.

This plane is typically found with just the body as it had so many parts to be complete, that they usually became separated along the way.  This example is in what I imagine is an owner made box and has approx. 15 of the 3 piece cutter and bottom sets.   Roger Smiths PATAMPIA books have a complete story on the details.  There is a near complete example w/ 200 or so pats shown in the archives of my sales archive webpage www.AntiqBuyer.com on this page.

Hardt Patent Block PlaneHardt Patent Block Plane  A very rare block plane in super condition.  Lots of original japanning with no chips, cracks, or other damage.  The patent # for this unusual plane is 502906 and it comes up with a Google Search.  Louis John Hardt of Yuba City California was granted his patent for a plane design on August 8th 1893.  In addition to the block plane offered here, he also made bench and jointer size planes as well.  It is not known how many sizes were offered or how many were produced, so few have ever turned up.  There are just a handful of the block planes that have ever been found.

It is a very distinctive design where the front end of the plane moves making the throat opening larger or smaller.  Another odd feature is that he utilized Sargent parts including the cutters, lever caps and in this case the iron cap on his own castings.  It has be theorized that there was just one production run in about 1893 explaining the relative rarity of the plane.  There is a more complete write-up and details in Roger Smiths first PATAMPIA book.   Very Nice!!

Steers Patent No. 307 Jointer PlaneSteers Patent No. 307 Jointer Plane  This is a 1st model earlier version given the style of the blade adjuster.  The patent for the design was granted in 1883 and the cutter is marked with that info.   Later models utilized a frog similar to Stanley designs.  The handle horn is missing.  This plane is in otherwise pretty nice condition.  The rosewood sole strips are pretty nice noting some chipping.  Marked proper long cutter.  A hard to find plane.  There is a complete write-up and details in Roger Smiths PATAMPIA books.  Nice!!

Metallic Plane Co of Auburn NY Fillister PlaneMetallic Plane Co of Auburn NY Fillister Plane  A pretty rare plane in pretty nice condition.   The Excelsior stamp on the cutter is the only marking.  Lots of original japanning with no chips, cracks, or other damage.  The Rosewood handle is beautiful.  The oftentimes missing fence for the fillister bed is present, undamaged and nice.  The screws for the fence may be replacements as they are different from each other and not the typical Mushroom cap style typically seen.  This type of plane is a well known and documented.   A fellow named Storkes who partnered with Palmer got the patent.  They made a line of well received bench planes that were popular in the NY / New England region back in the last quarter of the 19th century. There is a complete write-up and more details in both of Roger Smiths PATAMPIA books.   Very Nice!!

Birmingham Batwing Rabbet PlaneBirmingham 5" Batwing Rabbet Plane  This small cast iron Birmingham rabbet plane is the 5 1/8" size from Birmingham's line of "Batwing" rabbet planes.  This example is only the second or third of these rare planes to ever turn up.  One of those other known examples sold in a Browns Tool auction for over 3K a few years back.

This 5" Batwing Rabbet Plane is rarer than the smaller 4" size.  The 4" Birmingham Batwing has turned up several times in auctions over the years and is known in several other top tier collections.  John Wells, now past, a well known plane authority, wrote up a very detailed analysis of this 5" varient in the Winter 2010 issue of the Fine Tool Journal / FTJ.  He analyzed all of its characteristics and determined all is right with this rare variant.

The overall condition is very nice with it still sporting approx. 85% or more of its original japanning. There is no rust or pitting to speak of.  The cutter is proper and original.  The spanner type cap nut is also proper and original. The throat is good, and there are no other condition issues. There is no lever cap, and as John Wells analysis determined, this is correct for both the 4" & 5" sizes of this plane.  RARE, Different, and Nice!!

Mayo Patent Plow PlaneMayo Patent Plow Plane w/ Cutters  This is a very nice example of the Mayo Plow Plane.  Roger Smith goes into great detail concerning this pane and how it is related to the Philips Plow in his seminal work on American Patented Planes.  The condition of this example is very nice.  It retails much of its gold finish and highlights.  The box of cutters is nice as well.  Note the original Rosewood handle and graceful horn.  The depth stop is present.  A fine example that deserves a place in any collection focused on patented metallic planes of the 19th century.  Different, Unusual and Nice!!

c.1860 - 1870 Mystery Jack Planec.1860 - 1870 Mystery Jack Plane  This unusual plane is a mystery.  It is an early plane that dates from its construction characteristics and design dates from the 1860's or a bit later.  It has a nice Moulson cutter in it.  The frog design looks a lot like Stanley's type 3 planes or Leonard Bailey's Victor style or line of planes.  The lever cap is cast, hollow in the back and has a distinctive look to it.  Also note how the handle is dovetailed into its position.  It is a great casting that was japanned.  A nice example of an early and probably unique plane.  Nice!!

Holly Patent Smooth PlaneHolly Patent Jack Plane  Birdsill Holly began producing planes in 1852 shortly after forming the company Silsby, Race & Holly Co. located in Seneca Falls NY in 1848.

This 15 long Holly Patent Jack Plane would be considered a second model.  The plane is in very nice condition overall.  The main differences from earlier models are the way the handle is set up, and the design of the cast blade holder.  The bottom on plane has cast in corrugations as well.  The fragile lever cap is damage free.  The cutter is long and nice, but the logo is hard to make out.

A good looking early patented plane.  No rust or pitting.  Nice wood.  No apologies.  An early, rare, and desirable patented plane for the advanced tool collection!!

Holly Patent Smooth PlaneHolly Patent Jointer Plane  Birdsill Holly began producing planes in 1852 shortly after forming the company Silsby, Race & Holly Co. located in Seneca Falls NY in 1848.

This 20" long Holly Patent Jointer Plane would be considered a second model.  The plane is in very nice overall condition noting the replaced / make do lever cap.  The original fragile lever cap must have broken and the previous / original owner looked around at what was available and what was the latest in cutting edge technology, and decided to go with a Leonard Bailey lever cap from a vertical post plane, or an early Bailey Bench plane.  It is really quite ingenious.  He ran a bolt in from behind the split frog, through the slot in the cutter and lever cap, and then tightened it with a nice winged thumbscrew.  An elegant solution and not a bad idea at all as it is probably a better design and more robust than the original.

A good looking early patented plane.  No rust or pitting.  Nice wood.  The Buck Brothers cutter is long and nice.  The bottom of the plane has cast in corrugations.   An early, rare, and desirable patented plane for the advanced tool collection!!

Worrall Patent 20Inch Transitional Jointer PlaneWorrall Patent 20" Transitional Jointer Plane   Thomas Worrall was granted his first patent for a plane in 1854.  Worrall formed and operated 2 different tool and plane making concerns, the Lowell Plane & Tool Co. and The Multiform Moulding Plane Co of Boston Mass.  According to Roger Smith he closed up shop sometime in 1858.  He was granted at least 5 other plane related patents in that short period.

This 20" Closed handle fore plane is in excellent condition.  This example is clearly marked on the nose of the plane and the cutter is marked as well.  It has a great look to it and is a nice example of one of the earliest American Patented planes that can be found.  Nice!!

This early Worrall patent transitional plane has a great look to it and is a nice example of one of the earliest American Patented planes that can be found.  I am not sure if the color change on the bottom is a stain, or part of the wood.  It is not soft, rotten or - - - .  Nice, &  Different!!!

Knowles Type Patented Plane w/ Cut Out SidesKnowles Type Patented Plane w/ Cut Out Sides   Hazard Knowles was granted a patent for an iron bodied plane in 1827.  It is considered the first patent for a metal bodied plane granted in America. No known examples are marked.  Shortly after other versions of metal bodied planes based on the idea began to appear and are generally referred to as Knowles types.  In Vol. II of Smiths works on patented planes he pictures a plane identical to this one with the decorative cut-outs in the cast iron sides.   He calls it a Knowles type and provides some info based on how the cutter was marked.  Roger Smith covers the whole range of Knowles planes and Knowles type planes and their history, in some detail, in both volumes of his books on patented American planes. It is worth the read.

The overall condition of this 19" long plane is very nice with no damage to the cast iron body. The throat area is nice. There are no markings or patent info.  There is little to no rust or pitting.  It has not been over cleaned or fiddled with.  The infill shows appropriate and normal wear. There is some chipping to the handle.  It has its original wedge and a single cutter. The cutter is 2 3/8 and marked Ohio Tool which is probably a later replacement.    RARE, Nice, &  Different!!!

Leonard Bailey's Planes
Victor / Defiance / Vertical Posts / Split Frames

Leonard Bailey produced the Victor line of planes after he left Stanley and struck out on his own.  He produced this line of planes for approx 18 years beginning in 1875.  The history of that endeavor and his interactions with Stanley during this period are documented in Roger Smiths books.

# 1 1/4 Tailed Victor Block Plane by Leonard Bailey & Co.# 1 1/4 Tailed Victor Block Plane by Leonard Bailey & Co.   The Victor #1 1/4 had a cast iron tail piece / handle.   The Victor #1 & #2 had flat sides, adjustable throats and the cutter adjustment.  The sides were flat & excelsior style.  These block planes could be had in different finishes as the 1 3/4 or the 2 3/4.  The bodies are drilled to accept a  rear handle which would change it to a 1 1/4 w/ rear handle or 1 1/2 with handle and nickel trim.  The same would apply to the 7" Victor planes where a  #2 becomes a 2 1/4 or 2 1/2. with a tail piece  Walters dates all of them as 1875 thru 1888, the period when Leonard Bailey had left Stanley and struck out on his own.  If you find that confusing, it is, and you need a copy of Walters book, a type study, and some reprints of old catalogs to sort it all out.

The cutter has lots of life left and the adjuster performs as it should.  Note how good the cutter logo is.   The paint on the plane is 90% or better and original. There is no rust or pitting to speak of.  The rear handle looks great but has been declared a recast by some experts.  The collector did not think so when he bought it, and paid dearly for it.

The overall condition is fine with well over 90% of the original japanning, and no rust, pitting, or other condition issues.  It has a nice long properly marked cutter as well.  A pretty rare piece in the scheme of things.  One would expect to see 100 Stanley 9 3/4 planes for every one of these that turns up.  An opportunity ready for the collection.
