J. Long London Proof Slide Rule  An interesting slide rule for calculations having to do with determining the alcohol content, or proof, of liquids like wine of hard liquors or spirits. Such rules are oftentimes found in Sykes Hydrometer sets. The maker name J. Long, and location, 20 Little Tower Street London are on the top rail. It is in very nice condition.

Troughton & Sims/ London 6" Ivory Protractor / Scale / Rule  A nice example. Most sellers call these off as an navigation tool, and many are found in cased Maritime / Navigation sets, or as an architect scale / rule.

This rule is marked Troughton & Sims/ London a well known English maker. It is configured similar to a Architects Rule with numerous scales and a protractor on the perimeter. Rules like this are usually found in boxed drafting sets, or traveling Shagreen cases associated with navigation or architects. It has developed a nice even yellow Patina, and the overall condition is good.

L. Lumley & Co. Ltd, Makers London. Spile Rod Liquid Measure Rule / Ruler A six piece 19th century boxwood Gauger's Rod, Ullage Rod, or Spile Rod marked L. Lumley & Co. Ltd, Makers London.  Spile rods are rulers that are passed through the spile hole in a bung and used to measure the contents of a cask.

This one is compete in its nice leather case.  All markings on boxwood sections are readable.  The rods are in succession and can be screwed together, Each rod is 10" long,  Some of the rods have warped a bit but are solid.  Very unusual.

Stanley No. 85 1/2 Rosewood Panel Marking Gauge - Aug. 5, 1873 Patent This marking gauge is in exceptionally fine condition. Unmarked but nearly all known examples are not. Original keeper and no apologies.

A very nice example of a hard to find Stanley Tool in exceptional condition for use or the collection.

Sholl Patent 4-Stem Brass Tip Mortise Gauge / Gage Tool This unusual 4 stem marking gauge is in fine condition. It looks like Rosewood to me, but could be Mahogany. It was patented in 1864.

A single screw holds 3 or 4 arms and can lock them all. This idea worked quite well, making these a popular tool in their day. Most are well used and rough, or have warped stems. Not so here, it is very nice, and a bit different in that the stems are not marked with increments or a name. The patent date is stamped on the head. The Sholl patent gauge / gage was produced for about 20 years, in both 3- and 4-arm configurations.

A very nice example in exceptional condition for use or the collection.

Leavitt Machine Co. Patented 1888 Mortise Gauge / Marking Gage Tool This nickel plated double beam wheeled marking / mortise gauge is in very nice condition. It was manufactured by the Leavitt Machine Company of Orange Massachusetts. It is marked with a patent date of June 12, 1888. It was patented by Lucius O. Barrett of Brattleboro Vermont.

This gauge actually is an example of his Aug. 16, 1894 patent for the locking arm mechanism. It is a double beam gauge with graduations on the large beam. It retains most all of it's nickel plating and is marked with the manufacturer and patent date on the head.

Disston & Morss Rosewood Marking & Mortise Gauge / Gage  This Disston & Morss Rosewood marking gage is in very nice condition. Disston & Morss operated in the mid to late 1800s. It is the same Disston as the saw maker. Morss and he had a partnership of sorts for a line of tools and levels.

Thumbscrews are good and working. Points are short. Has brass wear strips. Put it back to work.

Millers Falls No. 2 Hand Drill Nice!! An early model with Rosewood handle, and the crank wheel guide that was dropped in later models. F. Raniville Co. Gd. Rapids Mich. Beltmakers Since 1874 Advertising Hatchet / Hammer A rare and unusual advertising hammer / hatchet combo tool.

The layout for the wording leaves a bit to be desired unless you were wanting the looker / reader to ponder what it all meant. A workable strategy I suppose. At first look it seems to read Franiville Co., and things come up for that, but the real name is F. Raniville Co. of Grand Rapids Michigan and one can find leather belting catalogs and other products under that name. Gd. stands for Grand, as in Grand Rapids.

3 Early Advertising Church Key Beer Bottle Openers  The top one is brass and from the Fresno Brewing Co. a pre prohibition Beer Brewery that is long gone. It dates from the teens and is over 100 years old. The square hole is a wrench for adjusting early gas fired car headlights. The Golden Glow is a famous WI beer, and the Pee Boy Opener is from the little known Lee Jo Tavern & Bottle Shop in Sacramento that is also long gone. As a lot.
